The Screen at Contemporary - SLOW. FAST. STRANGE: In the Mood for Love
Fri 2 Aug, 6.30pm–8.15pmThe Screen at Contemporary presents SLOW. FAST. STRANGE. A collection of films where the soundtrack is the main character.
Music and film have long been entwined. Each affects the other profoundly. They can blend harmoniously; they can contort each other. In symbiosis, they leave us seeing music and hearing image. Curated in collaboration with our friends at Running Circle Records, we have selected films with some of the best scores, and paired them with further listening recommendations.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000)
Two strangers form a bond when they suspect their respective partners are having an affair with each other. Deliriously sumptuous visuals invoke longing, memory, and desire, whilst a haunting score swells between the lovelorn protagonists as a kind of liminal, sonic space. Yumeji’s Theme, composed by Shigeru Umebayashi, will haunt you long after you’ve left the cinema. A masterful, potent, meditative audiovisual experience that exudes yearning from every frame and bar.

Further Listening Recommendations from Running Circle Records
Massive Attack & Mad Professor - No Protection
The remixed album by Mad Professor for Massive Attack’s 2nd studio album Protection fuses musical elements and cultural reflections of the UK in the 90s. The track Karmacoma is also sampled in the OST First Killing from Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels (1995), with the dubby atmosphere accompanying the main character on the assassination that opens the movie.
Gregory Porter - Nat King Cole & Me
Quizas, Quizas, Quizás is a classic by Nat King Cole, and was featured several times in In The Mood for Love as a signature touch by Wong Kar Wai. You can find a cover from the contemporary soul legend Gregory Porter on this tribute album to Nat King Cole.
Frank Zappa - Funky Nothingness
Frank Zappa’s music is an important element in Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together, with tracks Chunga’s Revenge and I Have Been in You juxtaposing the film score, soundtracking the volatile relationship between the characters. Funky Nothingness features previously unreleased recordings from Frank Zappa and includes three alternative versions of Chunga’s Revenge.
