BIG Room Family Films
With the impact on families of rising costs we wanted to make sure we were opening our doors wide for winter. Since January 2023 we’ve been running a series of special family film hubs, showing favourite movies, serving free hot choc and popcorn, and we’ve met lots of new families along the way.
Families can be especially stretched, so we wanted to make sure we created a really welcoming, relaxed space and a free and fun day out. We’re hugely grateful to Nottingham City Transport, who have been offering free group rider bus tickets each year. It means that families who otherwise might not be able to bring the family into town can come along. Sharewear kindly donated warm children and adult clothing and our participants have been very grateful for this.
We're also working with partner schools, community groups and foodbanks to share information to families. Even though we haven’t advertised the events publicly, they’ve all been fully booked. It says a lot when warm hubs and foodbanks across the country are in such high demand, but we’re proud to work alongside brilliant community groups and services and be part of a response in the city.
“By far the best day I’ve had with my kids! I’ve never enjoyed myself so much and I really hope we can come to more!” - First-time family visitor
"It was my first time today with the kids coming to Nottingham contemporary. I do have to say how amazing the day was, the children enjoyed the film and everything else :)" - First-time family visitor
"The staff were all a credit to the amazing day we had. Very welcoming and very friendly" - Family visitor
This year, we welcomed 451 participants into our BIG Room films, with 45% of visitors coming from postcodes in IMD areas 1 & 2*. Families who have not visited before are coming along. It’s been wonderful to get to know people and then welcome them back each week. Importantly, families tell us they like the atmosphere and think it’s a great offer.
We're taking part in The Big Give this March - the UK’s biggest matched funding campaign. The Big Give have pledged £2,500 in matched funds to Nottingham Contemporary’s free BIG Room Family Films project, so we need to raise a further £2,500 to unlock those funds during a week-long campaign that starts on 18 March, raising £5,000 in total. Every donation, no matter the size, will make double the difference.
The funds raised will help us to continue our BIG Room family film programme next Winter, welcoming in even more families!
If you're able to support, please click here to donate online 18-25 March 2025 to see your donation doubled.
