Exhibition: AFTERMATH 2017
Fri 12 May – Sun 14 MayExhibition launch: Thu 11 May, 6-8pm
Aftermath 2017 is a collaboration between Nottingham Contemporary and students from Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham. The project is an investigation into various aspects of the discourse represented within the recent Nottingham Contemporary exhibition The Place Is Here: The Work of Black Artists in 1980s Britain. Through artistic response, it aims to augment the conversation along with continuing it.
Although overwhelming, The Place is Here is broadly representative of a specific moment in British cultural politics and art from the 1980s. A range of works by over 30 artists from this moment in British history pose some significant questions about the diverse nature of identity and the politics of representation.
Artists contributing to Aftermath deal with different dimensions of the discourse in question, some of which coincide. The responses are filtered through their personal experiences and styles, attempting to break down the vast array of questions posed by ‘The Place is Here’ while contemplating their relevance within a contemporary context.
Exhibiting artists: Aditi B. Rakhe, Alasdair Ambrose, Daniel Jamie Polak, Mira Ramaherilanja, Sophie Kate Morton, Theresa Bradbury
