Black Speculative
Hustle Cinematic presents 'Black Speculative': an immersive film screening with interactive visuals and live music, exploring themes of fantasy and afro-futurism.
Celebrating black speculative fiction through sound and vision, the inaugural launch of The Hustle Collective's film strand 'Hustle Cinematic' will be held on Saturday, April 16th 2022 in collaboration with The Screen at Nottingham Contemporary.
The film, ‘Afro-Samurai’ will be introduced by cultural editor Kemi Alemoru (Dazed & Confused, Gal Dem, Vogue, The Guardian and Time Magazine), with BAFTA in Scotland (2011) award winning animator and arts educator Jessica Ashman also lending her insight.
"Afro Samurai'' is an anime in which a black samurai, voiced by Samuel L Jackson, goes on a mission to avenge the wrongful death of his father in a futuristic feudal Japan. Directed by Takashi Okazaki, with the music scored by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan."
The event will feature immersive visuals from illustrator and print artist Kim Thompson, inspired by the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, music of Sun Ra, and literature by Octavia Butler, N.K. Jemisin, and also in part by Toyin Ojih Odutola's 'A Countervailing Theory'.
Kim creates vivid illustrations centring on bold characters, both real and imagined, focusing on themes of nostalgia, fantasy and empowerment via otherness.
On the decks, Uncle Mo will fuse afro-leaning funk, jazz and disco influenced by their time spent living in Malawi. Expect an eclectic set ranging from Flying Lotus to Kongo Dia Ntotila. Leeds based scratch cognoscenti DJ NikNak will round off the evening with a set inspired by Sun Ra and comic book fiction, blending experimental compositions melding past and future in an intoxicating auditory mix.
