1525: Pocket Altars - Ritual as Practice with Wingshan
Taking inspiration from currently exhibiting artist Sarah Cunningham's paintings and their connections with landscapes and the natural world, Nottingham-based artist and witch Wingshan invites you to join a gentle workshop exploring ritual as artistic practice.
Working with pre-made padded textile altars, participants will use painting, hand-stitching, herbs, fabric and small found materials to create a portable personal altar. Through the four corners of the altar, the workshop will open up ideas around seasons, elements, animism* and our own experiences of cyclical change.
You will be encouraged to create your own correspondences and meanings through colour, materials and objects, making an altar that can continue to shift and grow beyond the workshop as new seasons arrive.
No previous painting or sewing experience is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to experiment. You are welcome to bring along anything you would like to include in your altar!

Wingshan is an artist, curator and witch whose practice explores ritual, mythology, world-building and collective forms of making. Drawing on folklore, magical practices and personal mythologies, her work often creates spaces for people to gather, play and make meaning together. She works across participatory performance, games, workshops, objects and installation, with recent projects exploring talismans, divination, ecological relationships and ritual as an artistic methodology. Alongside her artistic practice, Wingshan works as an artist development curator and mentor, supporting artists through collaborative and experimental approaches to learning and practice.
