1525 Capoeira: God Mother of Hip Hop
Sat 24 Aug, 11.30am–5pmCome and join our dance workshop led by Capoeira instructor Qaa’sim Uhuru and Dancer Haddy Touray. The workshop will focus on the similarities and differences found in Capoeira and Hip Hop by exploring and experimenting with the fundamental movements in both styles.
Hip-Hop and Capoeira have many similarities in their formation and have developed into recognisable art forms across the world. The aim of the workshop is to provide a space to explore the movements that arise out of using performative art as a narrator of social issues and an advocator for social change. By bringing ourselves back to the roots of music and movement, we find that capoeira has been a powerful medium to not only maintain a culture but to provide a new sub-culture, similarly to Hip Hop. By searching further into the realms of Hip-Hop and Capoeira, we will find and create inspiring stories and beautiful moments.
The day will involve workshops from both Haddy and Qaa’sim that will focus on the fundamental movements of the styles. This will be followed by Capoeira rodas and dance cyphers where participants can showcase their styles and experiment with new ones. There will also be opportunities to have conversations on the topic of capoeira, hip hop and social change.
The workshops are aimed at those who have experience in dance and/or Capoeira.
