Local Art Student Selected for Prestigious Venice Fellowships Programme

A-Level art student at Nottingham College, Charlotte Bowers, has been selected to spend a month in Venice during the renowned Venice Biennale – one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world.

As part of the 2019 Venice Fellowships Programme in partnership with Nottingham Trent University and British Council, Charlotte will have the exclusive opportunity of working at the British Pavilion exhibition whist also developing her artistic practice through a research project.

The placement was enabled through Nottingham Contemporary, who worked in partnership with British Council to help young people access the programme.

The young artist from Bulwell explains “I hadn’t heard of Venice Biennale before. It was something my tutor suggested we apply for. The appeal was to travel to a different country I’ve always wanted to go to and take part in an amazing opportunity.” She adds: “I’m nervous but very excited.”

Throughout August, Charlotte plans to research the history of portraiture and learn more about Italian art. Charlotte’s artwork looks at everyday working-class life and the politics of labour, and she is interested in the effect of tourism in Venice.

Throughout August, we will be sharing more information about Charlotte’s experience on our social media channels. Look out for updates.
