Gill's Creative Challenge: Shape & Shadows

A group of children drawing on to a piece of paper strung up to a wall.

Collect together a few objects from around the home - cups, ornaments, plants, etc. Pick objects that you think have an interesting shape, perhaps some simple shapes and some more complex ones.

Experiment with arranging them on a table or shelf against a wall. Use a torch, lamp or perhaps even sunlight to cast shadows of your objects. Experiment with the arrangement to change the shadows and how they overlap.

If you have some paper, put it on the wall and draw the outline of the shadows with a pencil. You could colour in the shadow outline or add shading or patterns.

Inspired by Diane Simpson’s work and the exploration of shape.
