Associate Artist Team: Peter Rumney
I am a playwright, poet, actor, director, and teller of stories. I love working alongside people to help them tell their own stories, through creative writing, drama, art and film, in schools, theatres, museums and galleries.
I have been an Associate Artist in Nottingham Contemporary’s Learning Team since 2016. I was previously writer-in-residence working with schools at Djanogly Art Gallery at the University of Nottingham.
I am the Joint Artistic Director of Dragon Breath Theatre, who make theatre with and for young people. Dragon Breath’s recent large scale work includes immersive performances for schools at Papplewick Pumping Station; bringing Donnington le Heath 1620s House & Gardens to life through performance with local schools (2019); creating the ‘Cassandra Room’ installation and exhibition at Wollaton Hall(2016); and touring a revival of Peter’s play about refugees and asylum seekers, ‘Jumping on my Shadow’ (2017), the only play written specifically for young people to win the ACE/John Whiting Award for Best Play (2002).
I was a Senior Lecturer in Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University from 1990 to 2019, and formerly a manager at City Arts, Nottingham.
I am currently working in schools on an action research project linking storytelling, wellbeing and creativity for The Mighty Creatives. 2023 will see publication of my book, Speaking of Homelessness, documenting and celebrating the making of a film of the same title with guests at the Sound Café in Leicester.
