Activity: Flat-pack Sculpture

Two sculptures by Diane Simpson.

Diane Simpson’s sculptures are constructed from everyday materials that slot together. Explore the sculptures by moving around them (you can do this using VR). Think about the shapes you can see, how they connect and how they balance.

Diane takes inspiration from the shapes of clothing and from architecture for her work. Where could you look to find shapes to inspire your sculpture - nature, machines, everyday objects, or clothing and buildings, like Diane?

Find some card (you can use cardboard packaging) and draw shapes. Cut them out and add slits. Explore how you can slot them together to construct 3D sculptures. Experiment with slotting the shapes together in different ways to get the best balance and most interesting structure.
