Painting and Animating Stories with WooSun Choi

An illustrated painting with abstract shapes and people.
Artwork: Woosun Choi

During our last exhibition season we were delighted to welcome local artist WooSun Choi for a series of creative workshops designed to introduce young people to the foundations of painting, illustration, and animation. In the introductory painting workshop, participants were guided through essential techniques — from brushwork and layering to texture and composition.

Building on this experience, the animation workshop introduced the exciting world of frame-by-frame drawing. Working entirely on paper, the group explored how movement, rhythm, and transformation bring images to life. WooSun’s hands-on exercises and practical guidance helped participants to learn how small creative decisions communicate emotion and narrative for the power of visual storytelling.

Across both workshops, WooSun’s expertise and enthusiasm created a hub of inspiration and curiosity for the young people. Her practice — rooted in painting, digital media, and the externalisation of emotional experience — offered young people a relatable and inspiring example of how art can be technically engaging. Her leadership provided a welcoming space where creativity could flow and participants feeling encouraged to develop their skills and try something new.

We’re proud to have hosted these engaging sessions and look forward to continuing to offer opportunities for young people that promote connection, build skills, and empower self-expression through art.
