Whirlpool (1949) - Hypnotica

The Screen at Contemporary

15 Feb 2017

A woman secretly suffering from kleptomania is hypnotized by David Korvo in an effort to cure her condition. Soon afterwards, she is found at the scene of a murder with no memory of how she got there and seemingly no way to prove her innocence. Unfortunately for Ann, Korvo is a conniving hypnotist who draws her into a web of deception and murder through his mind-altering abilities and ultimately frames her for his misdeeds. While Ann's psychiatrist husband believes that his wife didn't commit the crimes, Korvo's devious scheme makes proving her innocence quite difficult.

Whirlpool is a heady mixture of existential philosophy and post war angst and shows what forced domesticity can do to the mind.
