Utopia, Failed.

Art & Estate

10 Jun 2014 - 18 Jun 2014

Keith Coventry and Mark Lewis - included within Somewhat Abstract - are amongst numerous contemporary artists drawn to the subject of large-scale, post-war social housing. Many say that they are fascinated with ‘failed utopias’ - connecting council estates to modernist ruins.

Is affordable high-density housing a utopian dream? Were post-war projects doomed to fail - or have they been failed? This screening and discussion series focuses on the space between reality and representation, the artist and their subject, demolition and regeneration, architectural failure and planned neglect.

Tuesday 10 June

Screening: Nick Broomfield, Behind the Rent Strike (1974, 50mins)

Discussion: Documenting Lenton Flats

Tuesday 17 June

Screening: Marcus Coates Vision Quest, A Ritual for Elephant & Castle (2012, 52mins)

Wednesday 18 June

Workshop: Facilitated by Southwark Notes

Screening: Steven Ball & Rastko Novakovic Concrete Heartland (2014, 25mins)
