Seeds Workshop

“They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds” - Nicholas Kostis

Inspired by the themes of art and activism explored in Still I Rise, Seeds is a course that will allow participants to explore the different ways in which art can be used as a tools of resistance, protest, and empowerment. Throughout the course of 4 weeks, participants will learn how to create a performance piece and a variety of mixed art visuals to be displayed in an online exhibition for ​Seeds: A Digital Exhibition Manifesting the Art of Resistance.


Workshops will take place every Saturday during November on 3, 10, 17 and 24 of November, 11am-3pm

Course overview:

Week 1:  Introduction to course with Saziso, Founder of Anti-Gallery 

This will consist of an introduction to The Anti Gallery, and the outline for the course followed by a tour of Still I Rise. Saziso will then give modern and historical examples of how art has been used as a tool of resistance as well as examples of virtual exhibitions.

Week 2: Image as protest: Art illustration and mixed media workshop with Honey Williams

Honey self-identifies as a ​Renaissance woman slash creative entity, Singer Songwriter, Choir Director of the ​Gang of Angels​, Artist, Graphic Designer and Image Activist. She runs Contemporary Natural Hair by The Pickyheads, a closed Facebook group focusing on increasing the love for women of African descent throughout the diaspora via discussion, all forms of artistic expression and events. She is obsessed with fashion, marginalised beauty, culture, race and history and dabbles with zine making.

Honey will lead a workshop on the power of protest and using everyday images to convey powerful messages. She will teach participants how to create stunning and powerful pieces of work about issues that are important to them through mixed media. The workshop will allow you to learn new skills in illustration and using existing illustrations though collage.

Week 3: The art of self-expression: Performance art workshop with Natalia Bruce

Natalia is a freelance children’s learning facilitator and acting coach whose clients include Television Workshop, Nottingham Poetry Festival, New Art Exchange and Young Hustlers. She will lead a one-day workshop on resistance though performance, teaching the ways in which participants can use performance and live art documentation to express themselves about social or personal injustice.

Week 4: Curating and putting together the exhibition online and evaluation

This session will allow participants to complete any unfinished work. They will then be guided through the process of curating an online exhibition displaying the work they have produced throughout the month.
