Ralph Bakshi burst into public consciousness as director of Fritz the Cat, an X-rated animation, featuring urban- dwelling anthropomorphic animals, which established the viability of “cartoons” for adult audiences. Heavy Traffic, selected for screening by Tala Madani, is a semiautobiographical tale of a struggling artist set within a seedy portrait of 1970s New York. Mixing live footage with animation, the film derives satire from exaggerated sexual imagery, racial stereotypes and violence.
