Feminist curating; an active network?

13 Jul 2017

This is an evening discussion exploring the possibilities of having a feminist curatorial practice in the art world today. Speakers include Anne Ellegood, Laurence Rassel and Helena Reckitt, chaired by Lara Perry.

Over the past ten years there has been an increase in institutional exhibitions addressing feminism from an artistic perspective, as well as numerous publications exploring feminist art. The gender balance in exhibitions is also improving. That said, the art system and the organization of most art institutions are based on patriarchal structures that generate gender inequality and exclusion.

This event aims to offer a platform to discuss possible ways to challenge patriarchal structures of art institutions from within. Guest speakers Helena Reckitt (Goldmisths), Laurence Rassel (L'Erg, Brussels) and Anne Ellegood (Hammer Museum, LA) will present their practice, analysing how feminist curatorial practices and active networks of support and collaboration can implement changes and be transformative tools in both art institutions and schools. This conversation will be chaired by Lara Perry (Brighton University).
